What is Digital Mammography?

Mammography is an imaging technique that examines the breast using a low dose of X-ray with a device specially designed for the breast. In Digital Mammography, images are obtained in a digital environment using the latest system. In this way, the radiation dose received is reduced and the images can be examined on a special high-resolution monitor.

Mammography images examined by our Radiology Specialist allow the detection of a mass that may form in the breast before it reaches a noticeable size or the detection of microcalcification foci (may be in the stage before the mass forms). Digital mammography has a very important place in breast cancer diagnosis. TOMOKAY Medical Imaging attaches great importance to early diagnosis with Mammography.

In America and European countries and according to the Cancer Early Diagnosis Programs of the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Turkey, it has been deemed appropriate for women to have mammography every year starting at the age of 40.

Mammography is the only method that reduces deaths from breast cancer. With the widespread use of mammography for early diagnosis in America since 1990, deaths caused by breast cancer have decreased by 30%.

As TOMOKAY Medical Imaging, we work to minimize the deaths caused by breast cancer in Turkey. Early Stage Breast Cancer diagnosis made through Digital Mammography allows easier treatment methods to be applied to women. Thus, treatment can be applied with smaller surgeries, low-dose Radiotherapy, and fewer drugs.

Since breast cancer seen in women under the age of 50 is more dangerous, it is very important for women to have mammography every year.

Control Mammography

If mammography is taken every year as recommended, it is possible to diagnose breast cancer early and receive treatment. Women aged 40 and over do not have to be referred from any doctor. You can make an appointment and have your mammography whenever you want.

If you notice a hardness, swelling and color change in your breast skin or if you have had breast cancer before, you should have a diagnostic mammography.

Diagnostic Mammography

Diagnostic mammography is performed due to a mass or suspicion of a mass found during the doctor's examination.

If you detect a change in color, a pull on the breast skin, a hardness or protrusion in the breast, or if you feel pain or soreness in the breast, or if there is nipple discharge, a diagnostic mammogram may be necessary.

If a lesion is seen in the control mammogram, a diagnostic mammogram may be necessary.

How should I prepare?

  • Please bring your previous mammogram films or CDs.
  • Do not apply any talcum powder, deodorant, oil or perfume to your armpits and breasts on the day of your mammogram. These substances can create small errors in the mammogram and make it difficult to examine the mammogram.
  • Wear a two-piece outfit, top and bottom, so that you only take off your top and bra, and your pants or skirt are underneath.
  • We recommend that women who are menstruating have a mammogram the week after their period ends.
  • Women who are not menstruating can always come for a mammogram.
  • Don't forget to tell your entire health history, any surgeries you have had, and any breast diseases in your family and personally.
What should I expect?

When you come for mammography, fill out the form that our medical secretary will give you carefully. If there are any questions or topics that you do not understand, ask our secretary.

Mammography is performed by a female technician at our center. The answers you give to the questions of the technician who performs your scan will be used by our Specialist Doctor when evaluating the films.

The breast will be compressed and fixed between two plastic plates during the scan. The scan will take approximately 15 minutes.

It is very important to bring your previous mammography films because your breast films need to be compared.

When will I get the results?

The mammography film - CD and report are given within 1-2 hours.

Benefits and risks of digital mammography

  • Accuracy: Mammography is the most common method used for early diagnosis of breast cancer. However, mammography may not be useful in diagnosing all types of breast cancer. A suspicious abnormality in the breast should never be ignored, it should be followed up, even if your mammography is normal. If you notice any changes in your breast, inform your doctor immediately.
