Early Diagnosis of Prostate Cancer
A PSA blood test is performed, a prostate examination is conducted by a urologist, and a multiparametric prostate MRI (mp-MRI) is performed.
Biopsy Methods
If cancer is suspected, two types of biopsy are performed:
TRUS Biopsy
Performed without visualizing the lesion; may need to be repeated.
Fusion Biopsy
MR and US images are superimposed to perform a targeted biopsy of suspicious areas.
This results in a more accurate diagnosis.
Prostate MRI Scan
Prostate MRI (mp-MR) scans can be performed at Tomokay, but biopsies can also be performed using MRI images taken elsewhere.
You must bring your MRI DVD and report.
Pre-Biopsy Preparation
Aspirin and blood-thinning medications should be discontinued 1 week before the biopsy and should not be used for 1 week after the procedure.
Your doctor may prescribe a different medication if deemed necessary.
You should have your complete blood count, bleeding time, and clotting time tests done and send the results via WhatsApp.
Antibiotics should be started one day before the biopsy, with an additional dose given one hour before the procedure.
A five-hour fast is required.
Bowel cleansing is performed with a Libalaks enema before the procedure.
It is advisable to bring a companion with you to the biopsy.
Biopsy Procedure
The preparation and biopsy procedure take a total of 15-30 minutes.
It is performed painlessly with local anesthesia; sedation may be administered if necessary.
The US probe is inserted through the anus, and the required number of tissue samples (6-12 or more) are taken.
After the Biopsy
Rest for 30 minutes at the clinic and 1 day at home is recommended.
You can return to work the next day.
Antibiotic treatment lasts 5 days.
Mild bleeding may occur in the urine, rectum, and semen (this resolves within a few days to a few weeks).
You should drink 2 liters of water per day.
Sexual intercourse and sports are prohibited for 1 week.
Spicy and hot foods should be avoided for 1 week.
Precautions
You should seek emergency medical attention after a biopsy in the following situations:
Fever above 38°C
Severe chills, sweating
Pain in the anus
Inability to urinate
Excessive bleeding
